Virtual Reality for Dialysis Training

Dialysis is an essential treatment for patients with kidney failure, but may require weeks of in-hospital training for patients and their families and staff.

Dr Ben Reynolds and the Nephrology Team at RHC took worked with VR expert Professor Vassilis Charissis, supported by Kidney Research UK, developed a virtual dialysis environment. This clinical experience includes dialysis machines and equipment  and provides virtual guidance and support to train for nurses, people on dialysis and their families.

The immersive technology enables families and staff to develop confidence in a simulated environment, including recreating different care scenarios. The service can also potentially reduce the time spent training in hospital improving and may be transferable to other clinical training settings.
